Mauritius Surf

The surf in Mauritius became famous after the documentary, “Forgotten Island of Santosha” was released in 1974.

The island offers some insane surf with Tamarin Bay being the infamous left hander located in the south western part of the island. One Eyes, located at the point of the Le Morne peninsula, also offers some brilliant surf and is definitely the most consistent. You will also find the world class L’Ambulant on the northern tip of this peninsula. There are a number of other surf spots located around the island with some secret ones just 20 minutes south of Le Morne. Le Goulet is a fun wave located in the north western area of the island.

The best months for surf are generally April to September which coincides nicely with Mauritius low season rates so you can get to surf and make the family happy too! Cyclonic swells generally push from January to March.

Tamarin:
Best wind direction: South
Best time of year to surf: Winter (Southern Hemisphere)
Well direction: South West
Tide: Rising high tide

One Eyes:
Best wind direction: East South East
Best time of year to surf: Winter (Southern Hemisphere)

Location for accommodation is key for access to the surf. No decent accommodation really exists at Tamarin Bay but you could consider staying in one of the 5* properties in Le Morne, where you could walk to the paddle out at One Eyes. It does have a bit of a long paddle out so be prepared. You can also rent a boat to get to and from the break so get chatting to a local fisherman to barter a deal. It is suggested that you hire a car to get around to the surf spots on the island if you want some variety. Many Resorts now offer SUP’ing in the lagoons. One Resort on the Le Morne peninsula do offer a kiteboarding school and they shuttle you free of charge to the kiteboarding beach.

It is suggested you go surfing during the week but don’t let the locals put you off! Be polite, wait your turn and you’ll get some cooking surf on your holiday.
